Welcome back to the Labyrinth of the First Gen! In this week’s episode, we continue our conversation with One Luv, an organization based in St. Croix that is dedicated to activism, visibility, and allyship for the LGBTQ+ population in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. Today, we delve deeper into their mission and the challenges they face in creating safe spaces for the community. Join me as we explore their inspiring journey and the vision they have for the future.

The Importance of One One L.U.V.’s Mission

One L.U.V. is an organization on a mission to create a more inclusive and accepting society for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Their work not only challenges societal norms but also empowers individuals to embrace their true selves without fear of judgment or persecution.

A Snippet from the Episode

During the episode, we had the pleasure of hearing from Jamal, a board member of One Luv and a proud resident of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Jamal shared the impact organizations like One One L.U.V would have had on his own journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. He emphasized the importance of having safe spaces for young individuals to express themselves and find comfort in their identities. By providing resources and a support system, One Luv aims to help others navigate their own journey and break free from the constraints imposed by society.

Overcoming Challenges

Starting One L.U.V. was not without its challenges. Bobby, another dedicated member of the organization, shared their experiences of facing obstacles and traumas that had to be addressed before they could fully commit to this important work. They emphasized the importance of bravery and facing fears, as they vividly described their first pride parade and the feeling of putting their lives on the line for the cause. It is truly inspiring to witness their courage and determination to create change.

Generational Differences and Similarities

One L.U.V. understands the importance of considering generational differences and the unique needs of various age groups within the LGBTQ+ community. Jae, the President of One L.U.V. highlighted the similarities and differences they have observed between the older and younger generations. While the older generation may appreciate educational panels and social events tailored to their needs, the younger generation may find comfort in virtual spaces and require different types of support. One L.U.V. has taken on the challenge of bridging the gap and ensuring that its programs and initiatives cater to the diverse needs of its community members.

The Future of One L.U.V.

As we look ahead to the future, One L.U.V. remains is committed to its mission of creating safe spaces and providing resources for the LGBTQ+ community. They believe that while the overall goal remains the same, the strategies and approaches may evolve based on the needs and feedback of future generations. The voices of the younger generation will be pivotal in shaping the future of One Luv as they continue to fight for inclusivity, acceptance, and the freedom to be themselves.

Our Mission for the Future

During our conversation, Jae, Jamal, and Bobby highlighted their visions for the organization and their community. Bobby expressed the desire to bring the same sense of freedom and joy they experienced during a vogue event to the LGBTQ+ community in the Virgin Islands. Making the older and younger generations feel seen and supported is Jae’s passion, as they strive to create safe spaces and access to resources for queer individuals. Jamal envisions a future where no one feels alone, and where safe spaces and support systems are in place for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The work of One L.U.V. is not only changing lives but also creating a blueprint for other organizations and communities to follow. Their dedication to activism, visibility, and allyship is paving the way for a more inclusive Caribbean society. As we reflect on this conversation, let us remember that creating safe spaces and fighting for equality is an ongoing process that requires continuous learning, empathy, and understanding.
